FIRE GUTS PVC WAREHOUSE AND WOODEN STRUCTURES IN ACCRA'S NORTH INDUSTRIAL AREA
A major fire has broken out at Avenor in Accra's North Industrial Area, sending thick smoke across parts of the capital. The Ghana News Agency reports that the fire gutted a PVC warehouse and adjoining wooden structures near the Electricity Company of Ghana office at Avenor. Firefighters, police and ambulance personnel have been deployed to the scene as efforts continue to contain the blaze. The cause of the fire has not yet been established.
A major fire has broken out in the Avenor section of Accra's North Industrial Area, with flames and thick smoke visible across parts of the capital.
The fire is reported to have started in the early hours of Thursday, October 1, 2026, in an area occupied by businesses and residential structures.
The Ghana News Agency reported that a PVC warehouse and adjoining wooden structures were affected by the fire, with the affected facility located near the Electricity Company of Ghana office in the industrial area.
Personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service, Ghana Ambulance Service and Ghana Police Service have been deployed to the scene to support firefighting, rescue and safety operations.
Firefighters have been working to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading to neighbouring facilities within the densely built industrial area.
FIRE SPREADS THROUGH INDUSTRIAL AREA
Reports from the scene indicate that the fire has affected several structures within the Avenor and Kofikrom area.
3News reported that the blaze intensified as flames spread towards nearby structures, including an area close to a latex foam factory. A Fire Service representative warned that the fire could spread further if it was not contained.
Adom Online also reported that the fire spread towards the Duraplast facility, while traders and residents in the area attempted to move their belongings and livestock away from the flames.
The industrial enclave also contains residential structures, making the emergency particularly concerning for people living and working in the area.
FIRE SERVICE FACES ACCESS CHALLENGES
One of the challenges reported at the scene has been access to the affected area.
Onua Online reported that several Ghana National Fire Service tenders had been deployed but that firefighters were experiencing difficulties reaching the building because of limited access routes.
Other reports from the scene have similarly highlighted difficulties accessing some of the affected structures, with emergency responders working to reach the fire and prevent further spread.
The Ghana National Fire Service is responsible for fire suppression, rescue operations and fire safety management across Ghana.
REPORTS OF CASUALTIES
There have been conflicting early reports concerning possible casualties.
Some media reports have cited residents who said children may have been trapped in an affected residential structure, while other reports have carried claims that two children died.
However, those reports had not been officially confirmed by emergency authorities at the time of publication.
VNTV therefore does not present the reported deaths as confirmed until an official source establishes the information.
The full extent of injuries, deaths and property damage remains subject to assessment as emergency operations continue.
POWER SUPPLY AFFECTED
The fire has also affected electricity supply in parts of Accra.
The Electricity Company of Ghana said the outbreak at the North Industrial Area resulted in a power outage affecting several communities in the capital.
The outage was linked to the fire as emergency and safety measures were being undertaken around the affected area.
Residents and businesses in affected communities may therefore experience interruptions while the emergency response continues.
CAUSE OF FIRE NOT YET KNOWN
Authorities have not yet established what caused the fire.
The Ghana News Agency reported that the cause remained unknown as firefighting operations continued.
Investigators are expected to examine the affected structures after the fire has been brought under control to determine how the blaze started and whether any safety or electrical factors contributed to its spread.
AUTHORITIES URGE CAUTION
Emergency authorities have urged residents and motorists in the surrounding area to exercise caution and allow emergency personnel sufficient space to operate.
With several businesses and residential structures located within the affected area, emergency responders are also working to prevent the fire from spreading to additional properties.
The situation remains developing, with firefighting and emergency operations continuing.
VNTV will continue to monitor the incident and update this report as authorities release confirmed information about casualties, damage and the cause of the fire.
