GHANA SWEEP NIGERIA 3–0 TO END AFRICAN VOLLEYBALL CHAMPIONSHIP ON A HIGH

Ghana brought their 2026 CAVB Men’s African Nations Volleyball Championship campaign to a winning conclusion after sweeping West African rivals Nigeria 3–0 in their classification encounter in Tunis.

Ghana controlled the seventh-place playoff to secure a straight-sets victory, winning 25–22, 27–25 and 25–16 at the El Menzah Sports Palace.

The result handed Ghana seventh place in the continental championship and condemned Nigeria to an eighth-place finish.

The opening set was competitive, but Ghana maintained their composure in the decisive stages to take it 25–22.

Nigeria pushed harder in the second and came close to levelling the match in what became the tightest set of the encounter.

Ghana, however, survived the pressure and edged the Nigerians 27–25 to establish a commanding two-set advantage.

With momentum firmly on their side, the Ghanaians took control of the third set.

Nigeria struggled to produce the response needed to extend the contest as Ghana pulled away to win 25–16 and complete the straight-sets victory.

For Nigeria, the defeat brought a difficult conclusion to a tournament in which the team had initially progressed to the quarter-finals.

Nigeria’s medal ambitions were ended by Morocco in a dramatic five-set quarter-final.

The Nigerians won the opening set 25–20 before Morocco fought back, eventually securing a 3–2 victory to advance to the semi-finals.

That defeat pushed Nigeria into the classification matches, where they subsequently lost 3–1 to Rwanda before facing Ghana for seventh place.

Ghana capitalised on the opportunity and ended their own championship with an emphatic victory over their West African neighbours.

Nigeria finished the tournament with two victories and three defeats.

Attention later turned to the championship final, where hosts Tunisia faced Cameroon for the African crown.

Tunisia produced another commanding performance in front of their home supporters, defeating Cameroon 3–0 with set scores of 25–22, 25–18 and 25–19.

The victory handed Tunisia their 12th African Men’s Volleyball Championship title, extending their record as the most successful nation in the history of the competition.

Their triumph also secured Africa’s direct qualification place for the men’s volleyball tournament at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.

Tunisia, Cameroon and Algeria will represent Africa at the 2027 FIVB Men’s Volleyball World Championship in Poland.

For Ghana, the tournament ended without a medal but with a convincing victory over one of their biggest West African sporting rivals.

The straight-sets win ensured Ghana finished one position above Nigeria in the final championship standings and gave the team a positive conclusion to its campaign in Tunis.
