TWO MINERS DIE AFTER BEING TRAPPED UNDERGROUND IN JUABOSO MINING PIT

Two people have died after reportedly becoming trapped underground at a mining pit in Juaboso in the Western North Region, prompting fresh concerns over safety conditions surrounding mining activities in the area.

Preliminary information indicates that the two men entered the mining pit at about 12 p.m. on Saturday, September 26, to engage in mining activities.

They reportedly became weak while underground and failed to return by Sunday morning.

When the men did not emerge from the pit, a friend reportedly went underground to search for them and found them weak and in distress.

Residents and other members of the community subsequently launched a rescue operation.

The two men were eventually brought out of the pit and transported to the Juaboso Government Hospital, where medical personnel pronounced them dead.

One of the victims has been identified as Richard Oduro, popularly known as Churches, a resident of Juaboso Township.

The second victim has not yet been identified and has been described in preliminary reports as someone who was not known in the community.

EXACT CAUSE OF DEATH NOT YET ESTABLISHED

Initial accounts suggest the men may have suffered from extreme heat and inadequate ventilation while underground.

However, authorities have not officially established that as the cause of death.

The circumstances surrounding their deaths therefore remain under investigation, and any conclusion about what killed the two men would be premature until authorities provide further information.

The incident highlights the potentially deadly conditions miners can encounter underground, particularly where ventilation, emergency access and other safety measures are inadequate.

Mining pits can expose workers to several hazards, including oxygen deficiency, heat, unstable ground and potentially dangerous gases.

Whether any of those factors directly caused the deaths in Juaboso has not yet been officially determined.

RESCUE CAME AFTER MEN FAILED TO RETURN

The two reportedly entered the pit around midday Saturday but did not return as expected.

Their prolonged absence eventually raised concern.

By Sunday morning, a friend entered the pit to find out what had happened and reportedly discovered the pair in distress.

Community members then mobilized to bring them to the surface.

Despite the rescue effort, both men were pronounced dead after being transported to the hospital.

Further investigations are expected to establish exactly what happened underground and determine the official cause of death.
