Compare Botswana’s social grants with South Africa’s SASSA payments, including old-age pensions, child support and the key differences.
Botswana and South Africa both provide financial support to vulnerable citizens, but the amounts paid and the structure of their social grant systems differ significantly.
South Africa’s grants are administered by the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA), while Botswana operates a range of social protection programmes.
Botswana programmes including an old-age pension, disability support and a recently introduced child support grant.
So, how do Botswana’s payments compare with South Africa’s SASSA grants?
Botswana currently pays qualifying citizens aged 65 and above an old-age pension of P1 400 per month.
Using the Bank of Botswana exchange rate from 8 September 2026, this works out at approximately R1 717.
In South Africa, the Older Persons Grant pays R2 400 per month to qualifying people aged between 60 and 74. Those aged 75 and above receive R2 420 per month.
This means South Africa’s standard Older Persons Grant is around R683 more per month than Botswana’s P1 400 pension when the Botswana payment is converted into rand.
However, there is another key difference: South Africans can qualify for the grant from the age of 60, while Botswana’s old-age pension begins at 65.
Botswana has also introduced a P300 monthly Child Support Grant for qualifying households with children aged 12 months and below.
The payments began in August 2026 and were backdated to 1 April 2026.
At the same exchange rate, P300 is worth approximately R368.
South Africa’s Child Support Grant is considerably higher at R580 per month for each qualifying child.
But the grants are structured differently.
Botswana’s new payment is currently limited to children aged 12 months and below and targets qualifying lower-income households, while South Africa’s Child Support Grant covers eligible children up to the age of 18.
South Africa also has a wider range of nationally administered cash grants.
These include the R2 400 Disability Grant, R1 295 Foster Child Grant, R580 Child Support Grant and the R370 Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant, subject to qualifying criteria.
Botswana provides support through several targeted social protection programmes, including assistance for people with disabilities, destitute households, orphans and people receiving community home-based care.
However, not all of Botswana’s programmes have a single fixed monthly payment that can be directly compared with SASSA.
On the major payments that can be directly compared, South Africa generally pays more in rand terms.
South Africa’s R2 400 Older Persons Grant is higher than Botswana’s P1 400 pension, while its R580 Child Support Grant is also above Botswana’s new P300 child payment.
However, the comparison is not entirely straightforward.
Botswana and South Africa use different social protection models, have different eligibility rules and do not offer identical grants.
