Repairs to a major Durban water pipeline have now been completed, but it's not all good news for residents.
There is some good news for Durban residents and businesses affected by reduced water flow following last week’s leak on the Southern Aqueduct pipeline.
eThekwini Municipality has confirmed that repairs to the pipeline have been completed, with water now reopened into the Southern Aqueduct system.
The leak occurred on a section of the pipeline along Perth Road in Dawncliffe, Westville, resulting in reduced water flow and affecting parts of the municipality’s water supply network.
The announcement follows last week’s warning that residents in parts of the Central and Southern Regions, as well as in areas supplied by the Pinetown South System, could experience water supply problems during repairs.
While repairs have now been completed, residents should not expect water supply to return to normal immediately.
The municipality said the restoration of normal water flow will take place gradually to allow the system to stabilise and affected reservoirs to recover.
Water flow will progressively increase as the network stabilises and reservoirs are replenished.
eThekwini Municipality’s technical teams are continuing to monitor the system during the recovery process closely.
The Southern Aqueduct is an important part of Durban’s water supply network, and recent problems on the system have resulted in reduced water flow to several areas.
These have included large parts of Chatsworth, Umlazi, Queensburgh, Malvern, Shallcross, Bayview, Yellowwood Park, as well as parts of the Pinetown South system.
In Umlazi, the potential impact extends across numerous sections, including A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, J, K, L, M, N, P, Q, R, S, T, V, W, X, Y and Z.
With repairs now complete and water flowing back into the pipeline, the focus will be on gradually restoring normal supply across the affected areas.
The municipality has appealed to consumers to continue using water sparingly while reservoir levels recover.
