BENIN RECLAIMS AFRICA’S COTTON-PRODUCING LEAD AS 2019 VIDEO SHOWS AGRICULTURE MINISTER IN TEARS DURING TALON ANNOUNCEMENT
A video showing former Benin Agriculture Minister Cossi Gaston Dossouhoui becoming emotional during a cotton-production announcement by then-President Patrice Talon dates back to 2019. Benin has since regained the leading position in the latest 2025/2026 regional cotton rankings, producing 533,590 tonnes of seed cotton despite a 16.3% year-on-year decline. The country is now targeting at least 700,000 tonnes in the 2026/2027 season while expanding local textile manufacturing.
