CHINA ACCUSES U.S. OF ‘TARGETED SMEARING’ AFTER PENTAGON LABELS CONFUCIUS INSTITUTES SECURITY THREAT
China has accused the United States of “targeted smearing and stigmatization” after the Pentagon designated Confucius Institutes and related organizations at American universities as national-security threats. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth says about 80 successor organizations at 30 universities were identified under different names and dismantled through federal funding restrictions, alleging they posed risks involving influence and intellectual property. Beijing rejects the allegations and says Chinese-American educational exchanges promote mutual understanding and should not be undermined. Punch Newspapers
