GHANA’S 20% DIGITAL TAX COLLECTION STARTS TODAY AS BANKS BEGIN DEDUCTING VAT ON NETFLIX, SPOTIFY, CHATGPT AND OTHER FOREIGN SERVICES
Ghana’s new digital VAT collection mechanism takes effect today, October 15, requiring banks and payment service providers to collect and remit the existing 20 percent effective tax on qualifying cross-border digital services. The rate consists of 15 percent VAT, 2.5 percent NHIL and 2.5 percent GETFund Levy. The GRA says this is not a new tax and customers whose subscription prices already include the tax should not be charged again. Services that were not previously collecting Ghanaian VAT, however, could become more expensive as the Authority expands compliance.
