DR CONGO EBOLA DEATH TOLL PASSES 5,000 AS OUTBREAK OVERWHELMS HEALTH RESPONSE
The Democratic Republic of the Congo’s 2026 Ebola outbreak has now killed more than 5,000 people, making it the country’s deadliest Ebola epidemic on record and the world’s second-deadliest after the 2014–2016 West African crisis. More than 10,000 infections have been reported, with the Bundibugyo strain killing close to half of confirmed patients. Conflict, delayed detection, community deaths, shortages of trained personnel and major funding gaps are complicating containment efforts, while imported cases have been reported elsewhere in Africa.
