GOVERNMENT ORDERS PROTECTION OF MINEWORKERS’ SALARIES AHEAD OF DECEMBER INDUSTRY CHANGES AS GHANA PUSHES LOCAL CONTRACTORS INTO BIGGER MINING ROLES
Ghana’s Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources has ordered the Minerals Commission to protect mineworkers from salary cuts, loss of benefits and weaker employment conditions as the country shifts more mining operations from multinational companies to Ghanaian contractors. The Commission must harmonise wages and conditions across the sector, classify contractors according to capacity and complete its implementation proposals by November 30. Government says local-content reform must expand Ghanaian participation without making existing workers worse off.
