KUMASI CENTRAL PRISON CRAMMED WITH 1,600 INMATES IN FACILITY BUILT FOR JUST 500
Kumasi Central Prison currently houses about 1,600 inmates despite an authorised capacity of 500, according to the Ashanti Regional Prison Command. CSP Richard Bukari says overcrowding, inadequate feeding support, healthcare challenges and limited space continue to affect the facility. The prison has responded partly through rehabilitation and revenue-generating programmes including commercial water production, vegetable cultivation, pig farming and other livestock projects, while calling for non-custodial sentencing, presidential amnesty, better management of remand prisoners and transfers of suitable low-risk inmates.
