SINGAPORE LAYOFFS SURGE TO HIGHEST LEVEL SINCE COVID ERA AS CORPORATE RESTRUCTURING DEEPENS
Singapore recorded 4,800 layoffs in the third quarter of 2026, the highest quarterly figure since the final quarter of 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic. The increase was driven primarily by restructuring in internationally exposed industries, while the share of companies expecting further layoffs rose from 2.8% to 3.1%. Despite the warning signs, total employment expanded by 27,700 and overall unemployment remained at a relatively low 2.0%, showing that the labour market is weakening in some sectors rather than experiencing a broad collapse.
