TANZANIA ARRESTS 124 BURUNDIANS OVER ALLEGED IMMIGRATION VIOLATIONS IN DAR ES SALAAM
Tanzanian authorities have reportedly arrested 124 Burundian nationals in Dar es Salaam as part of an immigration enforcement operation targeting foreigners suspected of violating the country's immigration requirements.
The operation was carried out across several areas of Tanzania's commercial capital, including Ubungo, Kigamboni, Ilala, Kariakoo, Msimbazi, Jangwani and Buguruni.
Authorities said the exercise was aimed at identifying foreign nationals allegedly living or conducting activities in Tanzania without following the required immigration procedures.
AUTHORITIES PROMISE MORE CHECKS
Officials have warned that similar immigration operations will continue as authorities increase enforcement of laws governing the entry, residence and activities of foreign nationals.
The individual immigration status of all 124 people has not yet been publicly detailed, and it remains unclear what further legal or administrative action each detainee may face.
The development comes amid increased attention on migration and foreign nationals across East Africa.
Burundi and Tanzania share a border and have longstanding economic and social ties. Tanzania has also hosted large numbers of Burundian refugees over several decades.
However, refugee status, lawful immigration status and undocumented migration are legally different categories, meaning the circumstances of each person detained will be important in determining what happens next.
