ITALY DEPLOYS TROOPS AS PROTESTS GRIP CITIES WHILE 25,000 RALLY FOR PENSION REFORM IN MADRID
Italy and Spain experienced another weekend of major demonstrations as economic and political frustration continued across Europe. Italy deployed 500 additional army personnel to reinforce security in Milan after the previous weekend’s violence, although Saturday’s Milan protest remained largely peaceful; clashes were reported in Rome, Turin and Bologna. In Spain, about 25,000 demonstrators marched peacefully in Madrid demanding inflation-linked pensions and stronger retirement protections, while a separate anti-establishment protest in Barcelona descended into fires, looting and vandalism, resulting in around 100 arrests.
