ANOTHER TANZANIAN OPPOSITION LEADER FACES POSSIBLE DEATH PENALTY AS GOVERNMENT INTENSIFIES TREASON PROSECUTIONS
Senior Chadema official John Pambalu has been charged with treason over allegations that he sought to obstruct Tanzania’s 2025 general election and organise protests aimed at pressuring the executive. He becomes the second major Chadema figure to face the offence after party chairman Tundu Lissu, whose treason trial is awaiting a November 6 judgment. Treason can carry the death penalty in Tanzania, although prosecutors have argued in Lissu’s case that capital punishment is not automatically mandatory. The allegations against Pambalu remain unproven.
